Solstice Celebrations and Ceremonies
The summer and winter solstices have long been a time to celebrate life and the cycles of creation on this planet and in the universe. In honor of life everywhere, we offer solstice gatherings.
The purpose of these ceremonies is to express the joy of living and gratitude for our role in creation and the universe. We hope to provide a forum for participants to reflect on their lives and make changes that would benefit them, others and the planet.
Drum Making Workshop
- Drum Making Workshop $125
The hoop drum is the classic tool shamans use to journey to the spirit realms. In this workshop, you’ll build a hoop drum with goat skin stretched over a wooden frame. We’ll also build a padded drum stick to use with the drum.
The frames, goat skin and supplies will be provided. You’ll want to find a thin stick that you can use to make a drum stick. It needs to be approximately 16 inches and you can trim it to length at the workshop. Around 1/2 inch diamerter or a little less will keep the weight down. Ash, maple and spruce are good choices because they are strong.
I’ll put the goat skins in water to soak early in the morning. When you arrive, they will be ready. After you choose a frame and skin, you’ll measure and cut the skin. Then a series of holes need to be punched into the goat skin. All the while, the skins need to be kept wet so that they don’t dry out pre-maturely.
When the preparation work is done, the skin will be laced up and uniformly tightened. After the finishing touches, the drum will need to be dried
We’ll enjoy community as we craft our drums. Bring your own snacks and lunch. Bring clothes you don’t mind working in. Also, bring some clothes pins from home. You’ll want to be mindful to wash your hands before eating.
